Coat Care for All Coat Types

Taking care of your dog's coat is a crucial part of maintaining its well-being and health. Different coats require different forms of care to ensure they remain healthy, shiny, and free from tangles. In this guide, we will explore how to care for long, short, and wiry coats in the best possible way.

Coat Care
Long Coat Care:

Dogs with long coats, such as Maltese, Shih Tzus, and Collies, require regular brushing to prevent matting and the buildup of dirt and loose hair. Use a metal comb or a brush with long bristles to penetrate the thick coat and make sure to brush all the way down to the skin. You may need to divide the coat into sections and brush through each layer individually. It's also important to trim the coat regularly, especially for breeds like Poodles that have continuously growing hair.

Short Coat Care:

Dogs with short coats, like Labradors, Dobermans, and Dalmatians, also need regular grooming, although it's not as intensive as for long-haired breeds. Use a soft brush or a rubber brush to remove loose hair and dirt from the coat. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe down the coat and keep it shiny and clean.

Wiry Coat Care:

Wiry-coated breeds, such as Cairn Terriers, Wirehaired Dachshunds, and Schnauzers, have a unique coat structure that requires special attention. Their coats consist of both soft undercoat and stiff guard hairs, making them prone to tangling if not groomed regularly. Use a comb with close teeth to access both the undercoat and guard hairs and make sure to brush through the coat thoroughly to prevent tangles and mats. Instead of clipping this type of coat, it's best to hand-strip it.

Regardless of your dog's coat type, it's important to establish a pleasant grooming routine and stick to it regularly. By investing time and energy in training your dog, with R+, to stay still during grooming sessions and caring for your dog's coat, you can help keep it healthy and happy for many years to come.
